Course Description:

This course will empower the PT/PTA to use current concepts and techniques in rehab of the upper extremity (elbow) from injury back to the field. Come join us as we look at the spectrum of elbow innovations allowing patients to return to play. Learn from a local sports physician and physical therapists with combined experience of over 50+ years of sport experience. The course will focus on how to help return your youth & adult athletes to play. Lecture and hands on lab format. (Maximum 16:1 student to PT faculty ratio.)

Note: PTA’s are welcome to attend with the understanding that a portion of this course will be on the physical therapist’s evaluation of the patient.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will be able to:

●  Gather an elbow specific history to identify common elbow related disorders in young athletes.

●  Have a working knowledge of surgical techniques as described by the orthopedic surgeon and how to progress through protocol.

●  Proficient in rehabilitation techniques for elbow related surgeries; specifically, UCL reconstruction/repairs.

●  Proficient in clinical assessment and differential diagnosis of throwing related elbow symptoms.

●  Have a basic understanding of throwing movement analysis for identifying possible risk factors/movement discrepancies.

Speakers

    Robert J. Asuncion PT, MPT, DPT- Dr. Asuncion’s clinical expertise is in outpatient orthopedics with an emphasis on sports medicine and return to play following pre- and post-surgical injuries. He has worked with upper extremity orthopedic specialists for the past 20 years. He specializes in rehabilitation following upper extremity including UCL repairs and reconstruction, as well as developing return to play and throwing programs. Dr. Asuncion earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical therapy from CSU Fresno and completed his advanced Doctorate at the University of Montana.  He has served in various roles as Owner/VP/Clinical Ops Director/Regional Director/Multi-site Director for several organizations, all with a focus on Orthopedics and Sports pre-habilitation and rehabilitation. Prior to specializing in outpatient orthopedics, he worked in an Acute Care Hospital rehabilitating neurologically impaired clients. He utilizes some of these same neuro-cognitive approaches for his return to sport athletes. He was instrumental in developing an overhead throwing programs for the youth athletes. Dr. Asuncion is currently adjunct faculty at CSU Sacramento’s Physical Therapy Department and previously served as an adjunct professor in the Allied Health Department at Sacramento City College 2008-2020. He has presented and coordinated, lead numerous continuing education courses: SF Giant Sports medicine, return to sport – ACL and foot-ankle, orthobiologics, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and Superior Capsular Reconstruction. He was also invited as a guest lecturer to present on the impact of dynamic warmup and ACL rehab in China (2015) and exercise and body fat in London (2018). He continues further research in various areas of Physical Therapy.

   William “Bill” Workman PT, DPT, SCS, OCS, CSCS is a certified clinical specialist in both sports and orthopedic physical therapy with nearly 20 years of experience in sports medicine and orthopedics. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a Doctorate degree in 2005. Post-professional specialization has included extensive continuing education coursework, active involvement in professional conferences and research, as well as opportunities to inspire youths through sports medicine programs at local schools. Dr. Workman is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist of both Sports and Orthopedics; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist; Certified Sportsmetrics provider (injury prevention and performance enhancement); APTA credentialed clinical instructor; and a Certified ImPact PT (concussion management).  He has been an Emergency Medical Responder for the past 8 years, as well as the Laguna Creek High School Varsity Football sideline injury specialist for the past 6 years. He has been a guest lecturer on concussion management and a member of the Executive Planning Committee for Elk Grove School District Sports Careers Academy. Actively involved in research, he has published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. As an outpatient PT at Shriners Children’s Northern California, he specialized in return to sports for young youth athletes, and helped develop and run that program for 6 years. He presented at the Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Symposium for the Young Athlete at Shriners Hospital for Children in 2019. Currently, he is the owner of Return to Play Sports; and a clinician at UC Davis Edwards Athletic Center. 

     Dr. Andrew Bagdasarian DPT, SCS has been a practicing physical therapist since 2015, building outpatient sports and orthopedic experience with EXOS, the San Francisco Giants, Results Physical Therapy in Sacramento, and the Sacramento Rivercats; who he continues to support during their homestands. He has progressed his education by completing a Board Specialty in Sports (SCS), is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), and EXOS Performance Specialist (XPS). Andrew has presented academically both in local and national settings and has previously served as a mentor in the Results Sports Residency and for physicians completing Mercy Sacramento’s Family Practice Residency. Andrew has a special interest in late-stage sport rehabilitation and sport specific testing, as well as conservative management and rehabilitation of the throwing shoulder and elbow.

      Dr. Sean Robinson MD was born and raised in Sacramento. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology. Dr. Robinson then attended Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Following medical school, he returned to California and received his orthopedic training at the San Francisco Orthopedic Residency Program. During that five-year residency, Dr. Robinson developed a particular interest in Sports Medicine.

Dr. Robinson completed his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the prominent Cedars Sinai - Kerlan Jobe Institute where he received focused training in hip arthroscopy and preservation, Tommy John UCL reconstruction, complex shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears and knee ligament and meniscal injuries. He is a highly qualified and skilled arthroscopic surgeon treating the hip, shoulder, elbow, and knee. In addition to arthroscopic surgery, he is experienced with arthroplasty of the shoulder, knee, and hip – including anterior approach hip replacement as well as fracture care of the upper and lower extremities. As part of his fellowship, Dr. Robinson provided care to numerous professional and college sports teams including the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Galaxy, Los Angeles Sparks, and Loyola Marymount University.
